  • He is also a former coach of KPL team Belagavi Panthers, which has been embroiled in the match-fixing controversy

On December 2, the Central Crime Branch had conducted a raid at the residence of Shinde, who is a former coach of KPL team Belagavi Panthers, after obtaining a warrant from a city court.

The 39-year-old Shinde is the coach of the Karnataka U-19 team and a managing committee member of KSCA from Raichur Zone. He is one of nine people to have been arrested so far in the match-fixing probe.

Belagavi Panthers owner Ashfaq Ali Thar, their drummer Bhavesh Bafna, Bengaluru Blasters players Nishant Singh Shekhawat and M Vishwanath, their bowling coach Vinu Prasad, Bellary Tuskers captain CM Gautam and spinner Abrar Kazi, and international bookie Sayyam Gulati are the others who have been arrested.

‘Lots of evidence’

“The arrests so far are backed by a lot of evidences. Shinde has been arrested on the basis of evidences,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said.

The Central Crime Branch, which is probing the matter, had grilled Shinde for two days before arresting him.

“Shinde along with Ali Ashfaq Tara had allegedly fixed a few matches,” a police officer said.

The KPL fixing scandal came to light when Ballari Tuskers bowler Bhavesh Gulecha lodged a complaint with the police against alleged bookie Sayyam and drummer Bhavesh Bafna.

Rao asked the players and others involved in the scam to turn approvers.

“Since lots of people are involved in this scandal, I have made it very clear that there is a provision of an approver in the CRPC,” Rao said. “If they come and admit that they have committed a mistake, we will give them a status of approver and carry on our investigation. This is the offer we are giving them,” he added.

“We are taking into custody only the players, who have insulted the game. More than a sport, it has been reduced to a betting game used like gambling,” he added. — PTI
