Sweden’s Armand Duplantis set a world pole vault record of 6.18m at an indoor meeting in Glasgow today, adding one centimetre to the record he set in Poland last week.

Duplantis, the 20-year-old who won silver at last year’s World Championships in Doha, cleared the bar with something to spare. He opened at 5.50m and got over 5.75m on his second try.

The old record of 6.16m set by French vaulter Renaud Lavillenie had stood since 2014.

Albuquerque: World record holder Christian Coleman overcame a sluggish start to run the season’s fastest 60m in the preliminaries of the US Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Friday. Coleman, the Tokyo Olympics 100m favourite as the world champion, went on to win comfortably in 6.48seconds despite easing up early in his first meeting of the season.

Wadeline Jonathas dominated 400m qualifying, winning by more than a second in 51.32 and Chase Ealey claimed the women’s shot put with a final round throw of 18.99m. On the men’s side, Conor McCullough scaled 25.31m to win. — Reuters
