It was a night of stalemates for the big teams in the Nations League on Saturday, including a drab scoreless draw in the rematch of last year’s European Championship final. England were held 0-0 by Italy to leave Gareth Southgate’s side without a win in three matches in the top-tier Group 3. Hungary drew 1-1 with Germany, while Netherlands came from two goals down against Turkey to draw 2-2. Belgium were held 1-1 Wales.

Double silver for lifters in Youth World Championships
India’s Akansha Kishor Vyavhare won the silver medal in the 40kg category, while Vijay Prajapati finished second in the 49kg event in the IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championships in Leon, Mexico. Akansha lifted a total of 127kg (59kg + 68kg), while Vijay managed to lift 175kg (78kg + 97kg).

Long jumper Aishwarya leaps to 6.73m
Karnataka’s B Aishwarya produced the second-best long jump effort by any Indian woman as she cleared 6.73 metres in the qualification round on the third day of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. Her effort is second only to World Championships bronze winner Anju Bobby George’s national record of 6.83m.

Defending champions Maharashtra held on to their slender lead over hosts Haryana at the top of the medals table after the penultimate day of the Khelo India Youth Games. Maharashtra have 38 gold, along with 35 silver and 29 bronze, while Haryana have 37 gold, 34 silver and 39 bronze.

Niraj beats Punjab’s Sartaj to win 50m rifle 3P gold
Niraj claimed the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions gold ahead of Punjab’s Sartaj Singh Tiwana at the 20th Kumar Surendra Singh Memorial shooting competition here. Niraj beat Sartaj 17-9 in the final but the Punjab youngster won the junior event.

Olympics champions Viktor Axelsen and Chen Yufei clinched the respective men’s and women’s singles titles at the BWF Indonesia Masters. Axelsen beat third seed Chou Tien-chen 21-10 21-12. Chen beat Ratchanok Intanon 21-16 18-21 21-15.

Root, Pope hit tons as England respond strongly
Joe Root scored his fastest Test century while Ollie Pope struck a superb 145, as England launched a stirring fightback to reach 473/5 at the close of play on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand. Resuming on 90/1, England excelled on a good batting wicket to trail by 80 when stumps were drawn. Root was unbeaten on 163.

Dutch wildcard Tim van Rijthoven capped a dream run at the Libema Open by beating top seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-1 in the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
