Uruguayan ex-football star Diego Forlan waves to the crowd during his farewell match at Centenario Stadium in Montevideo on Saturday. Forlan, winner of the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa who played for Manchester United, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid among others, hanged up his boots in 2018.
The match, between a Uruguay team and an international Friends XI, had many former and current footballers taking to the pitch. Forlan was joined by Argentineans Javier Zanetti, Diego Milito, Esteban Cambiasso, Juan Roman Riquelme and Juan Sebastian Veron. Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia was another star attraction as he played for Forlan’s team.
Uruguay’s Luis Suarez also turned up to show his appreciation for Forlan. The Barcelona striker played the first half in his normal position and set up a goal for Forlan. In the second half, though, he took up a different role, and ended up doing a decent job as goalkeeper. The match finished 6-6.
