Sitges (Spain): The Indian team posted a second straight win in Pool A of the FIDE World Women’s Team Chess Championship by beating Armenia 2.5-1.5 in the third round here today. The Indians had defeated Spain 2.5-1.5 in the second round to notch up the first win after being held to a 2-2 draw in the opener against Azerbaijan. With the win in Round 3, India moved up to the second spot on 7 board points and 5 match points behind the formidable Russia (11 board points, 6 match points). In the match against Armenia, Tania Sachdev and Bhakti Kulkarni notched up wins, D Harika settled for a draw while the young R Vaishali lost.

England World Cup winner Roger Hunt dies at 83
Roger Hunt, a striker in the only England team to win the World Cup and one of Liverpool’s most prolific scorers, has died. He was 83. Liverpool, where Hunt spent most of his playing career, said he died on Monday after a long illness. Hunt scored 285 goals in 492 appearances, making him Liverpool’s second-highest goalscorer of all time. Hunt scored three goals in six appearances at the tournament. He played in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Former Pak captain Inzamam undergoes angioplasty
Pakistan’s former captain and most capped player Inzamam-ul-Haq had to undergo an emergency angioplasty at a private hospital here after complaining of heart-related issues and breathing difficulty. Teammate and current PCB chairman Ramiz Raja later confirmed on social media that the 51-year old Inzamam has been discharged from the hospital.

Iran qualify for women’s Asian Cup for first time
Indonesia joined four other countries, including first timers Iran, in qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup to be hosted by India in January-February next year.
