India suffered a 3-4 loss to New Zealand in their final group match in hockey’s Women’s World Cup to finish third in Pool B. India, however, progressed into the knockout stage by avoiding the fourth place in the pool by edging out China on goal difference.

India went 1-0 up in the third minute through Vandana Katariya before New Zealand struck back hard to lead 3-1. Lalremsiami reduced the lead to 2-3 in the 43rd minute and Gurjit Kaur scored with a drag-flick in the 58th to reduce the deficit to 3-4. After New Zealand dominated early possession, India took the lead when a diving Vandana deflected the ball in after a flick by Lalremsiami. — Agencies
