New Delhi, March 5

Blistering fifties by skipper Meg Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues powered Delhi Capitals to a 29-run victory against Mumbai Indians in a top-of-the-table clash in the Women’s Premier League here today. After the roaring success of the first leg in Bengaluru, the two teams received lukewarm response in the national capital with only a sparse crowd turning up in the beginning to watch the 2023 finalists in action.

Lanning hit six fours and two sixes in her 38-ball 53, which was her third half-century of the season. She added three useful partnerships to anchor the DC innings for the most part. Jemimah provided the late charge, smashing eight fours and three sixes in her 33-ball 69 to take Delhi to 192/4. Shafali Verma (28) and Alice Capsey (19) too chipped in with quick cameos.

Medium-pacer Marizanne Kapp then did the damage with two wickets at the start of the Mumbai innings before spinner Jess Jonassen again proved her worth with key strikes as Delhi restricted the Indians to 163/8. Jonassen, who was the Player of the Match in Delhi’s previous game, had Hayley Matthews (29 off 17 balls) caught at mid-wicket and broke the stumps to send back all-rounder Amanjot Kaur (42 off 27 balls).

It was the fourth straight win for last edition’s runners-up, giving them a two-point cushion at the top of the table. The heavy defeat sent Mumbai down to third as Royal Challengers Bangalore climbed into second with a better net run-rate.
