Karanveer Singh, Ramandeep Kaur win gold at athletics Nationals

Punjab’s Ramandeep Kaur won the gold medal in the women’s 35km race walk event in the 60th National Open Athletics Championships here today.

The 22-year-old finished the race in 3 hours, 15 minutes, 17 seconds. Rajasthan’s Sonal Sukhwal (3:18:35) and Uttar Pradesh’s Priyanka Patel (3:27:56) finished second and third, respectively.

In the men’s 35m race walk event, Uttar Pradesh’s Ram Baboo (2:46:31) broke the national record. Gujarat’s Sagar Satishchandra (2:53:43) was second, while Punjab’s Surinder Singh (2:54:22) was third.

Railways’ Karanveer Singh won the men’s shot put gold with a throw of 18.46m. Punjab’s Devinder Singh won silver, Rajasthan’s Vanam Sharma finished third.

In mixed 4x400m relay, Punjab finished second, behind Tamil Nadu.

Injuries are taking a toll on Swapna

Kolkata: Battling depression due to a nagging back injury, Asian Games gold medal winning athlete Swapna Barman has all but decided to call it quits, a formal announcement of which will be made in a few days. The decision comes less than 24 hours after Swapna, a North East Frontier Railway athlete, won a gold medal in high jump at the National Championships in Warangal. “My body is not taking the toll anymore. Mentally, I’m very depressed,” Swapna said. “A bit confused, but I’ve mentally prepared 80-90% to call it quits.” PTI
