Parul Chaudhary smashed the national women’s 3,000 metres record at the Sound Running meet in Los Angeles, becoming the first athlete from India to clock a sub-nine minute time in the event.

The 27-year-old from Meerut covered the distance in 8 minutes 57.19 seconds as she finished third in the race on Saturday night. Chaudhary, who specialises in steeplechase, broke Suriya Loganathan’s record of 9:04.5, set in New Delhi six years ago.
