Col RS Bishnoi has proposed to the government to discontinue the diploma courses for cricket, tennis and softball. Sources said that a low number of applicants over the years prompted the move. Meanwhile, wrestling is likely to get an increased number of seats due to its popularity. From 34 seats the discipline is likely to get 50 seats.

Proposal to shift coaching courses

Besides, there is a proposal to shift some of the coaching courses to one particular centre. Currently, the Sports Authority of India runs the diploma courses in sports coaching at NS NIS Patiala, SAI NSSC Bengaluru, SAI NSEC Kolkata and SAI LNCPE Trivandrum. The shuffling is being suggested to bring uniformity in the teaching and evaluation process. Football, table tennis and basketball have been proposed to be shifted out of Patiala, while kho kho, taekwondo and kabaddi, presently at Bengaluru, are proposed to be shifted to Patiala.

“The proposal is in the initial stage. Discussions with stakeholders would continue before the final decision is taken,” Bishnoi said.

The changes, if approved, would come into effect from the next academic session starting in April this year.
