India’s singles players Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri were ousted in the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon.
Bhambri lost 5-7 1-6 to top seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain, while Ramkumar fell 5-7 4-6 to Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva. Bhambri got an early break and was leading 5-3, but the 29-year-old squandered two set points before conceding the set. He couldn’t recover and was outplayed in the second set. Ramanathan, India’s top-ranked singles player, made strong starts in both the sets but lost steam in the end.
