Salem, February 16

Baba Indrajith struck an unbeaten 122 and shared an unbroken 184-run partnership with Vijay Shankar as hosts Tamil Nadu reached 291/4 against Punjab on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Group C match here today.

After electing to bat, TN were reduced to 64/3 and then 107/4 before Indrajith and Shankar revived their innings. The duo batted for 53.3 overs without separation.

At stumps on the opening day, Shankar, who came in at No. 6, was batting on 85 with the help of six boundaries.

Batting at No. 4, Indrajith was much more quicker as his 122 not out came from 181 deliveries and was studded with six boundaries.

Killer duo Shardul, Dube

Mumbai: India internationals Shardul Thakur and Shivam Dube starred with the ball and bat, respectively, as 41-time champions Mumbai gained an upper hand over Assam on the opening day of their Group B match.

Shardul (6/21) was simply unplayable with the new ball as he single-handedly dismantled Assam for a meagre 84 in 32.1 overs after Mumbai opted to bowl.

It was a struggle for Assam from the first ball as only three of their batters could manage double-digit scores, with Abhishek Thakuri (31) being the top-scorer. In reply, Dube hit an unbeaten 101. Saurashtra in control

Rajkot: Stand-in Saurashtra skipper Arpit Vasavada scored a composed fifty while opener Harvik Desai narrowly missed out on a 50 as the defending champions took a narrow first-innings lead on the opening day of their Group A match against Manipur.

Brief scores: TN: 291/4 from 90 overs (Indrajith* 122, Vijay 85*; Sukhwinder 2/61) vs Punjab; Assam: 84 all out in 32.1 overs (Thakuri 31; Shardul 6/21) vs Mumbai: 217/6 in 48.4 overs (Dube 101*; Rahul 2/42); Manipur: 142 all out in 45 overs (Keishangbam 76, Muhammed 51; Dharmendrasinh 4/62, Chetan 3/29) vs Saurashtra: 153/3 in 43 overs (Arpit 63*, Harvik 48; Lamabam 2/34).
