Gondomar (Portugal): The Indian men and women paddlers failed to deliver when it mattered most, losing to Slovenia and Romania, respectively, in the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympics qualifying team event to significantly reduce their chances of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. While the 17th seeded women played their hearts before losing to fifth seeds Romania 2-3, the men disappointed with their 1-3 defeat against Slovenia. A quarterfinals finish would have guaranteed an Olympics berth for the teams, but now, both the men’s and women’s squads have to win the plate division to qualify. All losers in the Round of 16 will take part in the knockout plate event. — PTI
