Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat took a wrong turn but still found his way to marathon gold, providing some late drama to what had been an uneventful race. After more than 40 kilometres of running through the twisting Birmingham streets, Kiplangat veered off course in the late stages but had built up such a commanding lead that the miscue did not cause any damage. The 22-year-old was a comfortable winner in a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 55 seconds.
TT teams record second straight wins
The Indian men and women table tennis players continued to impress at the Commonwealth Games, recording their second straight wins in the team events here today. First the Manika Batra-led women’s team outclassed Guyana 3-0 in a Group 2 match, and the men then thrashed Northern Ireland by the same score in a Group 3 tie.
Gymnast Yogeshwar makes cut
Yogeshwar Singh was the lone Indian male gymnast to qualify for the all-around final after his teammates Saif Tamboli and Satyajit Mondal narrowly missed out. The 25-year-old Haryana gymnast, who has participated in three World Championships, overcame stiff competition to finish 16th with an overall score of 73.600.
Chinappa, Ghosal advance to Rd of 16
India’s ace squash players Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal advanced to the Round of 16 after easy wins in their respective women’s and men’s singles matches. Both Chinappa and Ghosal, who are searching for an elusive singles gold at the CWG, registered 3-0 victories in the Round of 32.
Swimmer Nataraj books final berth
Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj has qualified for the final of the men’s 100 metres backstroke after clocking 54:55 seconds in the semifinals. The 21-year-old finished fourth in his heat and seventh overall to secure a berth in the medal event that will take place tomorrow. In the men’s 400m freestyle heats, Kushagra Rawat failed to advance to the semifinals after clocking 3 minutes and 57.45 seconds to finish 14th overall.
