Lausanne: The Indian men’s team midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad was on Monday named as 2019’s rising star of the year by the international hockey federation (FIH). The 19-year-old won the accolade ahead of Argentina’s Maico Casella and Australia’s Blake Govers, who finished second and third, respectively. Vivek polled 50 percent of all National Association votes, 23 percent media votes, 15.1 percent fans/players votes for a combination of 34.5 percent votes.

18-year-old cricketer collapses during match, dies
An 18-year-old cricketer collapsed and died of a possible cardiac arrest during a local cricket match at a college ground in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Monday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Satyajit Pradhan. Pradhan was at the non-striker’s end and was running for a single when he collapsed on the pitch. He was rushed to the district headquarters hospital where the hospital authorities declared him brought dead.

Hasan, member of Pak’s first Test tour to India, dies
Waqar Hasan, the last surviving member of Pakistan’s first Test side that toured India in 1952, died here today. Hasan featured in the Pakistan team that played its first-ever Test series in India in 1952 and also on the England and West Indies tours of 1954 and 1955-56. He played in the Tests that Pakistan won on these tours before retiring in 1959 after a 21-match career that fetched him 1,071 runs. Hasan, 87, who had been ill for a while, went on to become a successful businessman, setting up the National Food Products. He also served as the chief selector and manager in the Pakistan Cricket Board. Born in Amritsar on September 12, 1932, Hasan scored three half-centuries and a 49 in India in 1952 and later also featured in the famous Oval Test win over England in 1954. His only Test century — 189 — came against New Zealand in Lahore in October 1955. His score was then a Pakistan record. It was broken the next day by Imtiaz Ahmed, who scored 209 as the two batsmen put on 308 for the seventh wicket.

Lionel Messi gave a hat-trick of assists as Barcelona ended their turbulent week with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Real Betis to stay in touch with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Madrid’s 4-1 win at Osasuna earlier on Sunday put pressure on Barca and the Catalans responded well from two goals down, as Betis led twice at the Benito Villamarin through a penalty from Sergio Canales and brilliant solo effort from Nabil Fekir. Yet, Barcelona hit back as Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets pulled them level before Clement Lenglet headed in with 18 minutes left, all three goals teed up by Messi.

Inter Milan moved top of Serie A after storming back from two goals down to snatch a 4-2 win over AC Milan in a pulsating derby at the San Siro. Inter pull level on 54 points with Juventus, who lost 2-1 at Hellas Verona on Saturday, but are ahead of the champions on goal difference.
