Two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu, who tested positive for a banned substance in 2017, is all set to seek compensation from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for the mental stress she has endured as the final verdict on her doping case remains unpronounced.

“There was no thought of compensation earlier but the case has been dragged for too long. This is not only monetary, she has suffered much in these past years,” her brother Bijen Kumar Khumukcham said. However, they were compelled to take the decision after Chanu was deemed ineligible for the Arjuna Award, which cannot be given to dope-tainted athletes. “Recently we applied for the Arjuna Award and when we approached the national federation they said her case is not over yet. She’s not been cleared for doping,” Bijen said. “We are gathering information to go about it as soon as we figure it. We will also go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if the need arises,” he added. — TNS
