Why a Pune company is interested in cricket in Rwanda

Why would a Pune-based online media start-up be interested in, say, women’s cricket in Rwanda? And where is Rwanda?

Cricket in Rwanda is a recent development, due to deepening ties with Britain. Rwanda is a French-speaking and has been colonised by Germany and Belgium, becoming independent in 1962. Though the country has no historical ties with the United Kingdom, it joined the Commonwealth in 2009.

Cricket has taken deeper roots in Rwanda since then.

Women’s CricZone is a Pune-based online media company with focus on women’s cricket coverage from around the world.

The company has signed a five-year broadcast deal with the Rwanda

Cricket Association (RCA), making it the official streaming platform for all international matches played by the Rwanda women’s team.

The RCA has become only the second nation in Africa to secure a broadcast partner for their women’s team.

The capital, Kigali, has a pretty ground, and viewers can see matches being played on it during the six-team Kwibuka T20 Tournament, to be played from June 6 to 12.

Women’s CricZone, in a statement, said it wishes to push the sport for women in regions other than the top countries. Going right to Rwanda, a landlocked nation in Africa, is a wild start.
