India’s 184-run loss to Australia in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Monday has significantly impacted the qualification scenario.

After losing the 4th Test, the Sydney Test has now become a must-win game for the Rohit Sharma-led side to secure a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025.

South Africa have already sealed their place in the WTC Final after beating Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.

Either India or Australia will vie for the top honours with the Proteas in June this year.

India need to win the Sydney Test and hope that Sri Lanka defeat Australia 1-0 in the upcoming two-match series at home.

If India draw in Sydney (1-2 series result), it will rule them out of the race for the WTC final.

If India loses in Sydney (1-3 series result), there is not even a mathematical possibility for making it to the final.

If Australia win the Sydney Test, then they are through to the WTC final.

If Oz draw the Sydney Test against India in this series, they will have to at least draw both the upcoming Tests on the Sri Lanka tour.
