Jalandhar, December 15

After the district administration and the traffic police closed service lanes across the newly constructed PAP and Rama Mandi flyovers, heavy traffic flow from the city leading to Amritsar and Hoshiarpur has been diverted towards the Guru Nanak Pura road and due to the sudden traffic movement, several depressions have been developed on the road. Troubling the commuters, the road is crying for immediate attention. After the PAP-ROB service lane was declared unsafe, residents avoided travelling extra two kilometres to take the PAP flyover and instead, preferred the Guru Nanak Pura road to go to Amritsar via Chuggiti.

The increased traffic flow and the incessant rain have exposed that poor quality material was used to repair the road. Gravels are lying scattered on the road, making it difficult for motorists to commute on the already damaged road. Numerous potholes have emerged on the road after rains, turning its condition from bad to worse. Besides, absence of speed breakers and white stripes is also causing trouble. Bumpy rides have become a routine for motorists taking the road.

Jaspal Sharma, a city resident, said the uneven road and several potholes on the road were affecting the smooth flow of traffic.

“We pay taxes but the government has failed to provide safe roads to us. The maintenance of a road should be the priority of the MC,” Sharma added.

Karamvir Singh, a commuter, said: People have to wade through stagnant water on the road, posing a health hazard to people, especially children. Elderly persons also face a tough time while crossing the uneven surface scattered with stones.

Meanwhile, area MLA Rajinder Beri said the work of re-carpeting of the road was in progress and after the completion of the drainage work, the road would be ready in the next 15-20 days.
