Harvinder Kalyan, three-time MLA from Gharaunda, was unanimously elected Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on Friday.

Kalyan's name was proposed by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and was seconded by minister Ranbir Gangwa. Pro-tem Speaker Rabhuvir Kadian declared him elected Speaker unanimously as there was no other candidate in the fray.

Kalyan represents the Gharaunda Assembly segment in Karnal — a district not represented in the Saini ministry, which was sworn-in on October 17.

Kalyan, who represents the OBC Rod community, had missed the ministerial bus in the Khattar and Saini ministries.
