A local tailor has been ordered by the Ahmedabad District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission to compensate a bride after failing to deliver her bridal blouse on time.

Poonamben Pariya, a resident of Ankur, had paid Rs 4,395 in November 2024 to Soni, The Designer Shop on CG Road for a custom-made blouse to wear at a relative’s wedding on December 24.

She expected the blouse to be ready a week before the ceremony. However, when she visited the boutique, the blouse was neither completed on time nor made according to the agreed design.

The finished garment reportedly had visible stains and design flaws.

After the wedding, Poonamben requested a refund, but the tailor refused, allegedly insisting that she could keep the blouse but would not get her money back. Feeling wronged, she filed a complaint with the consumer court in June 2025.

The tailor initially failed to appear for hearings. Following a detailed examination, the commission ruled in Poonamben’s favour, citing deficiency in service.

The court directed the tailor to:

Refund the Rs 4,395 advance with 7% annual interest within 45 days,

Pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for mental distress, and

Cover Rs 2,000 in legal expenses.

The total amount awarded comes to approximately Rs 11,500.

Expressing satisfaction with the judgment, Poonamben said, “It was not about the money but about standing up for what’s right. As consumers, we should not be treated unfairly. I’m glad the court gave justice. This decision will encourage others to be aware of their rights.”
