An entrepreneur’s post on X (formerly Twitter) about the increasing salary demands for grooms in arranged marriages has sparked a debate online. Taking to X, Vineeth K expressed his concern over the societal pressure on Indian men to earn high salaries in order to have a potential suitable match for marriage.

In the post, the investor wrote: “Salary expectations of groom during wedding matches are insane…Those earning Rs 1 lakh per month are not even being considered if the person is working in the IT sector. The mindset of parents requires a RESET. How can a 28-year-old man earn 1-2 lakh, have his own car and a house? Your generation had all these for retirement.”

The investor’s views gained widespread reactions from people sharing similar experiences, calling out the mental pressure that men are being subjected to in terms of financial expectations in an arranged marriage setup.

A user wrote, “1 lakh + salary, car without loan, home without loan and parents away from the groom. This is the minimum for the girl to even consider the boy to visit her. After that, minimum photoshoots at exotic location, foreign trips for honeymoon. Sad state of affairs.”

Sharing his account, another user wrote, “Got recently rejected by a girl (working as a junior engineer), saying I (lawyer) earn nothing. Expectations are so huge!”

Another user commented, “The marriage situation is one of the biggest crises in India. Unless the parents become reasonable and convince their kids, we see a generation of working people marrying at 30-35 years with serious issues for having kids...many may not even get married. Unfortunately, I see girls and their parent having unreasonable expectations.”

However, sharing a different perspective, a user said: “How does a family survive with less than 1 lah per month in metro cities like Bengaluru? Around Rs 60,000 per month will be the monthly expense without a child. With child, it will cross 1 lakh per month.”

Another user commented, “A 28 year old can easily earn 1 lakh nowadays. Having a house and car is a personal preference.”
