A court here on Sunday sent to prison 70 lawyers known for their support for the Awami League party to face charges of “assault” and “attempt to murder” of fellow advocates during last year’s mass uprising that toppled then prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.

The court, however, granted bail to nine female lawyers and Dhaka Bar’s former president Abu Sayeed Sagor. Cases were filed against 144 lawyers who were charged with assault and attempt to murder during last year’s protests.

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
