N’DJAMENA: Boko Haram militants killed nearly 100 Chadian soldiers and wounded dozens more in what President Idriss Deby described as the deadliest attack ever on the country’s military. The soldiers were ambushed in the island village of Boma in the swampy Lake Chad zone, where the armies of Chad, Nigeria and Niger have been fighting the Islamist militants for years. “I have taken part in many operations but never in our history have we lost so many men at one time,” Deby said. reuters
Possible twister: Damage reports at Mississippi-Alabama line
Florence: A suspected tornado heavily damaged a store and other structures on Tuesday in northern Mississippi and Alabama as a severe storm system crossed the Deep South, authorities said. Authorities reported some minor injuries, but did not elaborate. National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Johnson said there were reports of widespread tree damage and some structural damage in north Mississippi’s Tishomingo County. AP
Israel parliament speaker resigns rather than convene vote
Jerusalem: Israel’s parliament speaker resigned on Wednesday after seven years on the job rather than complying with a Supreme Court order to convene a vote on his replacement. Yuli Edelstein had suspended parliamentary ctivities last week, citing procedural issues and restrictions on large gatherings due to the spread of the Covid. But opponents accused him of blocking a vote after his right-wing bloc failed to win a majority in March 2 elections. AP
