Nations should not overreact: China
United Nations: China has said all countries should behave in a ‘responsible’ manner and avoid overreaction that may result in more negative spillover effects. “China is decisively working to control the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus,” Chinese ambassador Chen Xu told reporters in Geneva on Friday, insisting there was no need for countries impose “excessive measures” like border closures. The death toll rose to 213, mostly of elderly people, after 43 new deaths all but one in Hubei, the epicentre of the outbreak, China’s national health authorities said, adding that 1,982 new cases had been confirmed, bringing the total to 9,692.
About 20 countries, including India, the UK, US, South Korea, Japan and France, have reported confirmed cases of the virus in travellers coming from China.
The WHO, which held an emergency meeting in Geneva on Thursday, on declared the outbreak a global health emergency, a rarely used designation that could lead to improved international co-ordination in tackling the disease.
“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said as he announced the virus as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. — PTI
