Melbourne: Indian-origin barrister Varun Ghosh will take his position in the Australian Senate next week with the Labour Party officially confirming him as their pick to represent Western Australia (WA). A joint sitting of WA Parliament on Thursday selected the 38-year-old Ghosh, a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers, to replace present senator Patrick Dodson. AP

Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy dies at 86

Rome: Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, the son of Italy’s last king, Umberto II, has died at the age of 86. The prince died on Saturday in Geneva, the Savoy Royal House said. He had lived in Switzerland since the family were exiled from Italy when he was 9 years old. Vittorio Emanuele was born on February 12, 1937, in Naples to Umberto, Prince of Piedmont. AP

Indian submarine in Colombo ahead of SL I-Day

Colombo: INS Karanj, an Indian Navy submarine, arrived in the port of Colombo on Thursday, ahead of Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day celebrations on Sunday. On a two-day visit, the submarine was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy. INS ‘Karanj’ will depart the island nation on February 5. AP
