Newly released bodycam footage shows a black man in the US dying during an arrest last year and saying “I can’t breathe”.
The footage comes shortly after the killing of another black man—George Floyd—which has triggered violent protests across the US against police brutality.
On May 20, 2019, three officers of the Oklahoma City Police Department restrained 42-year-old Derrick Scott, who can be heard complaining of breathlessness and congestive heart failure in the footage, reports NBC News.
A police officer can be heard telling Scott “I don’t care”, while another told him “You can breathe just fine.”
Scott appeared to be unresponsive minutes later in the footage and was later confirmed to have died. According to NBC, an autopsy said his cause of death was a collapsed lung.
According to The Independent, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office ruled that the police did not violate use-of-force policies. The incident was termed as a “homicide” by the state attorney general. Another district attorney is still investigating the death.
