Lahore, February 27
Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s party, PTI, plans to call a “parallel” Punjab Assembly session to elect the chief minister, speaker and deputy speaker, claiming that newly-elected CM Maryam Nawaz was in the House on “a stolen mandate”, a Dawn report said on Tuesday.
Imran, wife indicted on graft charges
A Pakistani court has indicted jailed ex-PM Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi on charges that they allegedly received land as a bribe by misusing his office.
Maryam, the senior vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, made history by becoming the first-ever woman CM of Punjab province. PTI made a call for a “parallel" Punjab Assembly on Monday after claiming a strength of 250 members.
To win the chief minister's election, a candidate needs to win the backing of the majority, which is 187 members in the House that currently has 327 seats. Meanwhile, PTI announced a countrywide protest on Saturday against the alleged rigging in the February 8 elections that has prevented the party from returning to power.
