The 19-year-old woman of Sierra Madre in southern California fell asleep in her backyard, CNN reported. She was woken up by the sound of a bear approaching.

The animal immediately attacked her, scratching her arms and legs before biting her leg. It was later reported that her wounds were not life-threatening.

The woman had a laptop with her and she hit the bear with it before managing to run into her house.

It was reported to be an unprovoked attack as the woman did not have any food. Last year, a homeless man was asleep when he was attacked by a bear. That bear never got caught.

Officials took DNA swabs from the teenager’s wounds. Two bears were later caught by wildlife officials, but after their DNA didn’t match the profile of the bear that attacked the woman, they were released.

The bear that attacked the teenager has not been found yet. When found, the bear will be euthanised. California is home to only black bears.
