Jalandhar, January 20

The protest at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall entered its second day here on Monday. Punjabi writer and poetess from Amritsar Sukhwinder Kanwal and members of the Taraksheel Society joined the protest on Monday.

Representatives of various organisations, intellectuals, writers and citizens are holding a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Members of the Tarksheel Society brought along a van carrying books. The week-long protest, which started on Sunday, is held from 5 pm to 7 pm. On Monday, activists discussed reasons behind the repeated win of the BJP in the General elections.

Sukhwinder Kanwal said women had become the face of the protest against the CAA in the country. She said: “From the attack against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh to women leading the protests at Shaheen Bagh, spontaneous reactions of women to the CAA and their anger has become a catalyst, boosting protest against the citizenship law. After Shaheen Bagh, many women across other states are also following suit. Women support can go a long way in changing the course of society and contemporary political movements.”

Author Dr Sewa Singh said: “The rise of the BJP has been accompanied by an anti-Muslim wave, which is detrimental for the unity and diversity of the country. He said the causes and aftermath of the rise of the party had to be understood deeply to analyse social transformations taking place in the country. The progress of one community must not be at the cost of other communities.”

Activists of various organisations, including Pendu Mazdoor Union, Punjab Students’ Union, members of the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Committee, Istri Jagriti Manch and city residents are participating in the protest. — TNS
