In this video, The Tribune’s Staff Correspondent, Sheetal, is talking to an expert on epidemiology and communicable disease at PGI, Dr PVM Lakshmi about Human MetaPneumoVirus (HMPV). As she asks questions on HMPV that’s on everybody’s mind given the current social media hype on HMPV, Dr Lakshmi puts all our worries to rest. She explains it’s just like any other respiratory virus with mild symptoms often self-limiting and undiagnosed. It’s only in severe cases among immunosuppressed individuals that it needs testing only through doctor’s referral. Samples can be sent to Viral Reset and Diagnostic Laboratory at PGI by doctors(only in severe cases). PGI’s VDRL is the only Govt-run and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved laboratory in Chandigarh where HMPV testing kits are available.
