High on poll fever, hills smash records
66% polling in Himachal
Shimla, May 7
Himachal surpassed previous records on Wednesday, as 66 per cent voters made their way to polling booths, the highest turnout in 16 Lok Sabha elections held since Independence. The highest turnout recorded in the state was in 1998 when 65.31 per cent of the electorate cast their vote.

Over 60 million vote in penultimate round
New Delhi, May 7
High turnout was registered in the penultimate phase of the Lok Sabha elections today. Over 60 million people voted in 64 constituencies to seal the fate of 1,737 candidates, including Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, his cousin Varun, Ram Vilas Paswan and Rabri Devi. One person was killed when the police opened fire outside a polling booth in Bihar�s Sitamarhi district to prevent booth capturing.

U�khand sees 10% surge in turnout
Dehradun, May 7
Over 62 per cent voters cast their votes to seal the fate of 74 candidates in fray for the five Lok Sabha seats amid tight security in Uttarakhand today. Sources put the overall turnout percentage at 62.75 (till 6 pm), indicating a 10 per cent increase from the 2009 General Election. The highest turnout of 76 per cent was recorded in Haridwar district.

BJP takes on EC after Modi denied permission for Varanasi rallies
New Delhi, May 7
The BJP today accused the Election Commission of denying permission to Narendra Modi to hold rallies in Varanasi at the behest of the ruling Samjawadi Party. The party has declared an all-out war against the Election Commission and has decided to protest in Varanasi and outside the EC office in Delhi.

In a verdict that could have a direct bearing on pending inter-state water disputes, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled Parliament and Assemblies had no power to enact laws to nullify judicial verdicts based on facts and findings.
