New Delhi, October 17
Former chairperson of the Delhi Women’s Commission and ex-MLA Barkha Shukla Singh today assumed charge as president of the Delhi Mahila Congress.
Welcoming Barkha, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Maken said women were given maximum empowerment under the leadership of AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi when the UPA Government was in power at the Centre.
Women were put in positions of power during the UPA government when for the first time, a woman, Pratibha Patil, became the President and Meira Kumar was appointed the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha, Maken said.
He said the first woman Prime Minister of the country, Indira Gandhi, also belonged to the Congress.
All India Mahila Congress president Sobha Oza said Barkha Singh, as the chairperson of the Delhi Women’s Commission, had fought for the rights and protection of women and raised their voice against atrocities. “Barkha will strengthen Mahila Congress in Delhi,” said Oza.
Speaking on the occasion, Barkha said it was a necessity to form a cadre of Delhi Mahila Congress workers so that they could go around every nook and corner of Delhi to enrol women into the Congress.
“Mahila Congress workers should come out on the streets to expose the wrong policies of the Aam Aadmi Party Government in Delhi,” she said.
