New Delhi, July 24

A major fire broke out in the Lok Nayak Bhawan opposite Khan Market in Central Delhi in the afternoon, said a Delhi Fire Service (DFS) official.

The fire started on the fourth floor of the multistory building which was sparked by a short circuit in an air-conditioning unit. Over 26 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire, said a senior DFS official.

Apart from being the headquarters of the Enforcement Directorate, the building also houses several government offices including the Income-Tax Department. Luckily no casualties were reported as people trapped in were timely evacuated by the firemen.

According to the official, “The fire has now been completely extinguished though the western side of the building on the fourth and fifth floors looks completely burnt.”
