The police today arrested two persons in connection with the killing of a 31-year-old e-rickshaw driver who was beaten to death when he tried to stop two men from urinating in public on Saturday.
A juvenile and Shekhar Kapasia (19) were arrested after the police investigated CCTV camera footages of the nearby areas of the GTB Nagar Metro Station where the incident happened. Kapasia was arrested from his hometown Muzzafar Nagar, UP, said Joint Commissioner of Police Rajesh Khurana.
Kapasia was caught on CCTV camera buying alcohol from a liquor shop a few metres from the Metro station before he had an altercation with the victim, Ravinder Kumar.
The police said Kapasia admitted during initial questioning that he had a heated argument with Kumar around on Saturday.
The incident had triggered widespread outrage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning it and directing the authorities to bring the culprits to book.
Rajesh Khurana said, “Kapasia is a second-year student of Aurbindo College in South Delhi. He and the juvenile are close friends.
Kumar was beaten to death by a group of seven people, who used bricks wrapped in a towel as a weapon. With calls to nab the culprits growing, the police had prepared a sketch of the suspects and showed it to people in 30 paying guest accommodations in Mukherjee Nagar. As it was a blind case, during investigation the police also analysed call detail records of over 100 students who were within 2 km of the spot, a police official said.
A senior police officer said five suspected involved in the killing are to be arrested for which various teams have been formed. Further investigation of the case is in progress, said the officer.
Mayor hands over job letter to widow
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation today handed over a job letter to the widow of Ravinder Kumar.North Delhi Mayor Preety Agarwal visited the victim's family at their residence at Kingsway Camp and handed over the letter to Rani for appointment as a class-IV employee, a senior NDMC official said.
Agarwal said Rani has been engaged under the 'Dependents Welfare Scheme' and "this decision has been taken in her favour as her husband was a victim and killed by a group of persons, after he had asked them not to urinate in the open". (With PTI inputs)
