The Vikaspuri- Wazirabad signal-free elevated corridor was thrown open to the public by the Delhi Government with the inauguration of the project's last part- a six-lane flyover at Mukundpur Chowk that will ease traffic congestion on the Outer Ring Road of the national Capital.
The government plans to extend the around 24-km-long Vikaspuri-Wazirabad corridor to Noida to ensure smooth movement and uninterrupted movement of traffic across this stretch.
According to the AAP government, which claims to have saved many crores in the construction of the corridor, the man hour saving of the commuters, fuel saving and lesser CO2 emissions on the stretch with this flyover will help Rs 56 crore of the project cost to be recovered in less than one year.
Cuts carbon footprint by 4,975 tonnes: Govt
By uninterrupted movement of traffic on this intersection, the flyover will boost environment health thus saving emission of at least 4975 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per day. As many as 2.29 lakh trees would be required to absorb this much amount of CO2 under normal conditions, said the government.
The Mukundpur intersection sees around 1.75 lakh vehicles per day and each vehicle will save at least four minutes and all traffic on NH-1, including inter-state pubic and commercial vehicles, will also be benefited.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who inaugurated the flyover at an event here, asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to construct a 9-km-long cycle track along the corridor from Mukundpur to Majnu-ka-Tilla crossing with an aim to cut down pollution and ease traffic.
The Vikaspuri-Wazirabad corridor, conceptualised by the previous Sheila Dikshit government, has three elevated stretches- all of which are now open. They include Vikaspuri-Meera Bagh, Mangolpuri-Madhuban Chowk and Madhuban Chowk-Mukarba Chowk and involves construction of several flyovers at different intersections.
