Ending days of suspense over his political future, former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is expected to announce his new political outfit tomorrow.
Although his media team did not officially confirm it, a close aide of the ex-CM said all preparations had been made for formal announcement of the new outfit.
Sources said Lt Gen TS Shergill (retd), who worked as senior adviser to the former CM, was likely to be the general secretary of the outfit. Capt Amarinder Singh did not respond to phone calls.
Ever since Amarinder announced to form a new party, no former Cabinet minister or party MLA has openly come out in his support so far.
The former CM is likely to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday on the issue of farmers’ agitation.
A senior party leader from Majha said the outfit should be announced after an amicable solution to the farmers’ stir to the satisfaction of the farmers’ unions.
The Congress top leadership was working to prevent poaching of party MLAs and to counter the former CM on his performance during his tenure, sources said. Ahead of the tomorrow’s event, Amarinder tweeted that his supporters in Patiala and elsewhere were being threatened and harassed. He is likely to release a booklet on his achievements as CM.
“From personal attacks, they’ve now stooped to threats and harassment of my supporters in Patiala and elsewhere. Let me tell my rivals they can’t defeat me with such low-level political games. They will neither win votes nor people’s hearts with such tactics. Those who have stood by me have done so because they believe in & want to continue working for Punjab’s peace and development. They will not be scared away by such petty acts of intimidation or persecution. We will continue to fight for Punjab’s future,” he said.
