First victims
of global financial meltdown Indian-American
kills self, family The troubled US
economy has claimed its first known victims. An unemployed
Indian-American man, upset over losing his high-profile job to
the global financial meltdown and finding himself a pauper
from a millionaire overnight by the plunging US stock market,
killed his wife, three sons and mother-in-law before
committing suicide himself outside Los Angeles over the
weekend.
Nano
to roll out from Gujarat Ahmedabad,
October 7
After a controversial
stay in West Bengal, the Tatas have shifted their Nano car
project to Sanand, near Ahmedabad, at an investment of Rs
2,000 crore, while declaring that efforts will be made to roll
out the world’s cheapest car from a makeshift plant in order
to meet the deadline. A MoU in this regard was signed by Tata
Motors managing director Ravi Kant and industrial secretary
Gouri Kumar, here today.
Curfew
lifted in valley Srinagar, October 7
After several days of uncertainty
and two days of curfew restrictions that stalled the separatists’
march to Lal Chowk here yesterday, normal life was restored across the
Kashmir valley today. As the day remained largely peaceful, the
administration lifted the curfew from all 10 districts of the valley.
Assam
violence toll mounts to 51 Guwahati, October 7
With the recovery of more bodies
from some violence affected areas and death occurring to at least five
injured in hospitals, the death toll in the current spell of communal
violence in Assam has gone up to 51 even as the government claims that
situation was still tense.
Bush
to sign N-deal bill today
Washington, October 7
President George.W Bush is set to
sign the legislation on the Indo-US nuclear deal into law tomorrow, an
occasion when India expects certain provisions of the 123 Agreement will
be cleared.
Riots
after suicide attack on PML-N leader Riots broke out in parts of
Bhakkar and Dera Ismail Khan today after the suicide attack on the house
of PML-N MP Rashid Akbar Niwani last evening that killed at least 23
persons and wounded over 40. The authorities did not rule out sectarian
dimension of the attack.

Ganguly to quit after Aussie series Hopes to sign off in style

Sourav Ganguly today made a
surprise announcement of his retirement from Test cricket after the end
of four-match series against Australia beginning Thursday, bringing to
an end a 16-year career that had of late shown a slump.

Japanese, American win 2008 Physics Nobel Stockholm, October 7
Two Japanese scientists and a
Tokyo-born American shared the 2008 Nobel Prize for physics for
discoveries in sub-atomic particles, the prize committee said
today.
