Cong leaders: Kotkapura verdict may hurt us politically

Chandigarh, April 13

Even as Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has announced challenging in the Supreme Court the orders of the High Court quashing the investigation of the Punjab Police SIT and removing its chief, anxiety has gripped party leaders over their government failing to take the investigation to its logical conclusion.

Senior party leaders admit the manifestation of anger was not only against the Akalis for their alleged complicity in the sacrilege incidents, but also at the Congress’ delay in acting against the accused in sacrilege incidents and Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura police firing cases. “If the Congress is crediting itself with tabling the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report and cornering the Akalis, the same issue can spell doom for the party in the coming 2022 Assembly elections,” said a senior MLA from the Malwa region.

On Tuesday, former minister Navjot Singh Sidhu upped the ante against his own government for delay in bringing to book the accused in the sacrilege incidents. Initially, Cabinet Ministers Sukhjinder Randhawa, Sukhbinder Sarkaria, Tript Rajinder Bajwa and Faridkot MLA Kiki Dhillon were involved in meetings called by the CM to carry forward the probe in the police firing incidents by the SIT headed by IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh. But later, the political leaders were not called for the meetings.

When the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report was tabled in Vidhan Sabha in 2018, Bajwa, Randhawa, Sidhu and MLA Harminder Gill went to the extent of naming the political leaders and police officers whose alleged complicity in the incidents was highlighted by the commission. — TNS
