City boys edge past Patiala

Chandigarh, April 19

Hockey Chandigarh registered a 5-3 win over Hockey Patiala on the fourth day of the 2nd Marshal Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament here on Friday. 

Baljeet scored the opening goal for Patiala in the 8th minute, but Chandigarh boys drew level through Gurjinder in the 14th minute.   

A minute later, Abhishek made it 2-1 for Hockey Chandigarh. He added to the tally in the 45th minute and Gurjinder extended the lead to 4-1 in the 50th minute. 

Patiala fought hard and scored a couple of quick goals through Parteek (52nd) and Robindeep (54th), but Parminder struck in the 58th minute to seal a 5-3 win for Chandigarh.   

Earlier in the day, Gaganpreet Singh struck twice to help Punjab & Sind Bank beat Vivek Academy 3-2. 

Vivek Academy took the lead through S Dalal in the 10th minute of the match but the bankers were quick to make the amends — Parvinder hitting home in the 18th minute to restore the parity.    

Dalal once again put Vivek Academy ahead in the 36th minute, but the side could not hold on to the lead for long as Gaganpreet struck for the bankers in the 41st minute. Four minutes later, Gaganpreet scored another goal to make it 3-2 for Punjab & Sind Bank. 

Vivek Academy made some desperate attempts to come back into the match, but the bankers guarded their fort well to emerge winners. 

In the second match, Indian Navy registered a 4-1 win over Sports College, Lucknow. 

Ajay Yadav put Sports College ahead in the fourth minute, but Ajinka (17th), Jugraj Singh (20th), Nitesh (39th) and Vinay Rana (48th) scored a goal each to help Indian Navy seal the match 4-1.

South Central Railway blanked Bangladesh Air Force 5-0. Lovepreet (28th, 40th) struck twice, while Sheshe (2nd), Dharminder (18th) and Raju Pal (58th) added a goal each to the Railway tally.
