Chandigarh, August 12

A contractual employee involved in sanitation work suffered a shock at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, on Sunday.

The victim, Rohit Kumar, was asked to clean the wall of the female surgical ward on the third floor.  As he threw water, he suffered a shock and fell. Employee union leaders got together and got him admitted to the hospital. It is learnt that one of his hands was not responding.

Other sanitation workers protested in the hospital and alleged that they had been forced to clean walls by doctors and the nursing staff, which was not their job.

The Medical Superintendent also reached the hospital and talked to the union. Further talks with the union will take place on Tuesday at 9.30 am.

Shish Pal, coordinator of the Union of Sanitation Workers, said if their demands were not met, they would go on strike.

The Medical Superintendent will hold an inquiry into the incident and will submit a report in two days, said the Director, Health Services.

“There was a minor incident of an electric shock to an outsourced hospital employee, Rohit, during routine comprehensive cleaning in the female surgical ward on the third floor. The employee was immediately attended to in the Emergency. The vitals of the employee are stable and he has been kept overnight in the hospital for observation. He is having normal meals and is comfortable,” said the Medical Superintendent in a press note.
