andigarh, August 21

A delegation of the Punjab Students’ Union (Lalkaar) met Dean, Students Welfare, of Panjab University and submitted a memorandum against “increased intervention” and harassment of students by the Chandigarh Police.

The memorandum read: “Several members and students reported to us that they have been receiving calls from Sector 11 police station. They are being asked to furnish details about their whereabouts and department. The police claim that they are keeping a watch in view of the upcoming student elections. They also claim that the student organisations have given them a list of supporters whose details are being verified. Firstly, we have not given any list of supporters to the police or any other authority. Selective targeting and harassment of students must be stopped immediately. The increased intervention of police in the campus is a threat to the campus democracy.”

The DSW, Emanuel Nahar, told the PSU (Lalkar) that he was unaware of any such steps being taken by the police, according to Amandeep of the PSU (Lalkar). — TNS
