Sukhna water level reaches highest point

The last two days’ rain has brough the water level in the Sukhna to 1162 feet, its highest level. The city has witnessed 104 mm of rainfall in the past two days. The water level in the lake had reached 1161.70 ft on August 24. Officials said the present level was just one feet from the danger mark.

It was in 2008 when flood gates of the lake were opened after the water level crossed the 1163 mark. GS Dhillon, former Chief Engineer-cum-Director, Irrigation and Power Research Institute, Amritsar, said sign was good for the lake. He said the water was also coming to the lake in good quantity from the upper reaches of the Himalaya.

The Sukhna has been facing a shortage of water for many years. Experts say with the water level reaching the highest level, the lake would not dry in next three years. — TNS
