At 8.8%, joblessness higher in state than in Punjab, HP, J&K

CHANDIGARH: Haryana has an unemployment rate of 8.8 per cent in the 15-59 age group, according to Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The unemployment rate is higher than neighbouring states.

Haryana has an unemployment rate of 8.8 per cent in the 15-59 age group, according to Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The unemployment rate is higher than neighbouring states.

The survey was released after the new government came to power at the Centre.

Among the males in the age group of 15-59, the unemployment rate is 8.4 per cent and among the females it is 11 per cent in the state. In Himachal Pradesh, the overall unemployment rate is 6.2 per cent, in Punjab it is 8.3 per cent and in Jammu and Kashmir it is 5.2 per cent. The national average is 6.5 per cent.

The PLFS survey was conducted from July 2017 to June 2018 and has pointed out that the unemployment rate has reached a 45-year high.


Diploma holders more affected

In the age group of 15 years and above, the unemployment rate is 8.4% in Haryana. In this age group, the unemployment rate is the highest (21.2%) among diploma or certificate holders, followed by 17.2% among graduates and 12.9% among those who have studied up to higher secondary.  

The unemployment among those with postgraduation or higher degrees is 8.9%. However, those who are not literate and have studied up to the primary level, the unemployment rate is 2% and 5.5%, respectively. 

In Punjab, the unemployment is higher among diploma holders (20%) followed by those with postgraduation degrees and above (18.4%) and graduates (13.1%). 


No paid leave 

Among the regular wage employees in Haryana, 57.5% are without any written job contract, 51.6% do not get paid leave and 53.4% are without any social security benefits like provident fund or pension, gratuity, healthcare and maternity benefit. 

There are 41.6% of employees who neither get paid leave nor have a written job contract and social security benefits. The figure of such employees in Punjab stands at 52.2%, but in Himachal it is 34.9%.
