Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB) edged out CAG Delhi 5-1 in the 36th Surjit Hockey Tournament at Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar today.
Punjab National Bank (PNB) beat Indian Air Force (IAF) by a solitary goal to enter the knockout stage.
In the inaugural match, PSB dominated the proceedings from the start but were not able to convert their chances. In the 15th minute, CAG’s Imran Khan (Jr) netted the ball to take 1-0 lead. In the 22nd minute, Varinder Singh scored the equaliser via a pass from Prince. At half-time, both the teams were locked 1-1.
In the 35th minute, Prince of PSB converted the penalty corner to take 2-1 lead. Three minutes later, Jaskaran Singh consolidated the lead to make it 3-1. In the 49th minute, Ranjodh Singh scored a field goal to make it 4-1. Gaganpreet Singh converted the penalty corner in the 57th minute to round off the tally 5-1.
IAF gave a tough fight to PNB but bankers’goalie Jasbeer Singh made some fine saves to keep them at bay. The solitary goal of the match was scored by Vishal Antil (26th). — TNS
