Experts bring all aspects of science on the table at LPU

PHAGWARA: Lovely Professional University (LPU) hosted a scientific event ‘Sourav Pal Endowment Lecture- Celebrating Science’ on its premises on Friday.

Lovely Professional University (LPU) hosted a scientific event ‘Sourav Pal Endowment Lecture- Celebrating Science’ on its premises on Friday.

The Advanced Research Group (CSRG) and LPU School of Chemical Engineering and Physical Sciences organised the event.

Four scientists shared scientific inputs with researchers and scientists during the event.

Visiting scientists, included Prof Sourav Pal, director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata; Prof Amitava Das, director of CSIR–CSMCRI; Prof Vijayamohanan Pillai, former director of CSIR-CECRI; and Prof Sanjay Batra, senior principal scientist at CSIR-CDRI.

Prof Sourav Pal is the fellow of all major national science academies and has been conferred several awards for his contribution, including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in chemical sciences and JC Bose National Fellowship

He said: “Science is usually curiosity-driven and is inter-disciplinarity in nature, adding that the barriers of traditional disciplines were breaking down.

Prof Amitava Das talked about molecular assemblies for predictive responses and melatonin hormone secreted by the pineal gland in animal, which regulates sleep and wakefulness. Prof Sanjay Batra shared his research interests in development of compounds for neglected diseases.Dr Vijayamohanan Pillai shared his expertise in electrochemistry and talked about polymer electrolyte, fuel cells, Lithium-ion battery, transformation of carbon nanotubes to nano ribbons etc.

Prof Pillai apprised the audience of the story of the origin of the periodic table, especially on the eve of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

Earlier, LPU executive dean Dr Lovi Raj Gupta and Dean Prof Dr Ramesh Thakur welcomed the guests.
