Hamirpur hospital fails to impress medical council

Members of the Medical Council of India (MCI), who visited Hamirpur medical college, functioning from the Zonal Hospital to inspect the facilities, were not satisfied with the infrastructure.

The three-member team had coordinator Dr MP Parchad, Dr Satyajeet Verma and Dr Yuvraj. Sources said the condition of the building and the proposed changes, required by the MCI, were yet to made at the hospital that would be converted into a medical college. The government has named the medical college as Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital. The emergency and casualty ward of the hospital was to be expanded and a new medical store building was to be constructed to shift the existing store for the ward expansion, but the authorities have not shifted the store.

The MCI has taken a serious note of it as casualty ward is too small to meet the requirements of the medical college and accommodate the patient inflow. It is observed that patients are forced to sleep on the benches and floors. The shortage of doctors is also observed by the MCI. The sources said there were only 19 doctors against the sanctioned strength of 29 with scarcity of medical specialists and surgeons. Archana Soni, Medical Superintendent, said there was shortage of doctors but interviews had been conducted. The process was on hold as the code of conduct was in force, she added.
