Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad today lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for demonetisation and described him as the “biggest destroyer of jobs” in the country.

The Congress leader, who was here to campaign for party leaders, alleged that in his five-year tenure, Modi had introduced several anti-farmer, anti-worker, anti-youth, anti-woman and anti-Dalit policies.

He alleged that Modi would be known for his maximum trips abroad. Addressing a press conference, he said, “Modi had come as an asset for the BJP in 2014, but today he has become a liability as he has put the country’s economy on a ventilator.”

Though Azad was ambivalent on the performance of the Congress in the Lok Sabha poll, he claimed that it would be a non-BJP and non-NDA government at the Centre after the election results were declared on May 23.

Azad said the PM Fasal Bima Yojana had benefited just 45 per cent farmers, whereas insurance companies had made a profit of Rs 3,000 crore.

“Although Modi talked about doubling farmers’ income by 2022, the fact is that the agricultural sector growth rate has declined to 1.88 per cent under the NDA regime from 3.84 per cent under the Congress regime,” the Congress leader alleged.

He said the ‘Beti bachao, beti padhao’ had remained a slogan only as the government had squandered Rs 155 crore on publicity and image-building out of Rs 280 crore meant for the scheme in 2018-19.
