Jammu city may have riverfront on Tawi

NEW DELHI: Jammu city may boast of having a riverfront on the Tawi, on the lines of the one near Sabarmati in Ahmedabad. Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday directed officials of the Ministry to include riverfront development as part of the Smart city plan being drawn for the winter capital of the state.

Jammu city may boast of having a riverfront on the Tawi, on the lines of the one near Sabarmati in Ahmedabad.

Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday directed officials of the Ministry to include riverfront development as part of the Smart city plan being drawn for the winter capital of the state.

Puri said this during his talks with J&K Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh who sought central help in developing the 4.5-km stretch under the Smart City project, an official release said here.

The Minister also assured the state government of priority consideration and all possible assistance in all matters of urban development. 

The Deputy Chief Minister also discussed various projects, progress and implementation of urban sector projects in the state.

Nirmal Singh also sought help for the completion of the sewerage project of Greater Jammu sanctioned under JNNURM earlier, inclusion of Katra and Udhampur under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) for basic infrastructure development. 

He informed Puri that the sewerage project of Srinagar, sanctioned under JNNURM, is progressing with additional central assistance released by the government. 

Puri said that after further consultations with the state government on mobilisation of resources for the sewerage project in Jammu, including its financing under the ongoing urban missions, NBCC will be directed to resume the project works. 

On the inclusion of two more cities under AMRUT, he said 500 cities had been included in this mission based on certain criteria and he would have the possibility in this regard considered. 

Referring to the details of various projects sanctioned and investments approved for J&K under various new urban missions, the Union Minister urged the Deputy Chief Minister to speed up their implementation so that the intended outcomes were realised within the specified timeframes. 

He referred to providing new water supply connections to 1.08 lakh households in the state under the Atal Mission.
