Srinagar, May 27

In a first, the Army has come to the help of the University of Kashmir, particularly in the wake of the September floods, by extending assistance to infrastructure development.

The assistance of over Rs 22 lakh has been provided in the form of 25 computers, two buses, laboratory items, furnishing of a hostel building, furniture and other facilities for students. This was announced at a seminar, “Inclusive Participation in Growth of Education”, organised by the University of Kashmir here today.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi was the chief guest and Lt Gen Subrata Saha, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, was the guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Subrata Saha said the Army had a vision of prosperity and growth of the education sector in Kashmir, while referring to the damage caused by the floods in September last year.

The GOC offered help to the university by way of development of the Kupwara campus and organising educational tours of students to other reputed institutions in the country.

“We had a legacy of infrastructure difficulties,” said Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, VC of the university. He referred to the financial constraints faced by the varsity while establishing five outstation campuses. “The floods led us to approach corporate houses of the country to provide facilities and equipment for our students,” Andrabi said.
